Hope for Children

Many children in Moldova are orphaned and impoverished. The detrimental economic and social situation in the country forced many parents into economic migration, their children often left behind. These children are forced to manage their own and their siblings’ lives in an environment of failing social systems and high crime rates. Even children in families still intact are suffering the consequences of Moldova’s problems – extreme poverty and parents’ neglect, alcoholism, or violence are companions in many childhoods. As a result, many children are malnourished, illiterate, and in bad health.

Hope for Children tries to address these issues. On one hand, the project aims to improve the children’s physical well being by offering regular meals, clothing, hygiene checks, and other necessities. On the other hand, Hope for Children wants to provide a perspective. Teaching how to read, offering games and leisure activities, and integrating problematic parents in the project give the children positive experiences and help improve their situation in the long run.

The project has been supporting roughly 50 children in the rural community of Tirnova since the beginning of 2010. This year, we have extended our support to a second village, Taul, where 25 children participate in the project. Furthermore, a summer camp was organized in 2011, allowing many of the children to go on holiday for the first time in their lives. The project is currently building a stronger base of local support and has won a local church to sponsor some events and contribute with volunteers.
