Kinderdorf Brasov

The Children's Village (Kinderdorf) Poiana Soarelui is situated on the outskirts of Brasov, Romania in the scenic Carpathian Mountains. A university town and one of Romania's largest cities (population 300,000+), Brasov is now one of the country's fast-growing economic centers and attracting an increasing number of foreign companies.

The idea of the Children's Village is to give disadvantaged children a home – complete with a mother figure, siblings of different ages, and a house for each family. They also receive care from educators, psychologists, social workers, and a doctor. The Village's 11 houses for around 60 children provide comfortable homes, starting with central heating, modern plumbing, and winterized roofs, and extending to emotional warmth and a sense of belonging.

Since its opening in the 1990s to date, more than 100 disadvantaged children have benefited from a sheltered childhood here. Meanwhile, the first young generation has grown into adolescents and adults who are now adapting to life outside the Village. New initiatives for teenagers are helping them prepare for independent adulthood in Romanian society.

The Foundation, originally called "Casa Copilului" (home of children), has been responsible for the Children's Village from the start and owns the Village's 11 houses. In January 2007, the Foundation changed its name to Dumbrava Minuata (magic woods).

The Foundation is in permanent contact with the Romanian authorities, especially with the child protection agency, and issues monthly statements of account on its use of funds. We have supported the Children's Village for many years and also advise the Foundation on developing its concept and program for the Children's Village.
